Welcome

Dear Colleagues and friends,

It gives me great pleasure to be able to invite you to the 16th International Congress of the European Association of Endoscopic Surgery (EAES). The site of this congress will be Stockholm, a modern old capital and a legendary beauty situated on 14 islands and therefore often referred to as “The Venice of the North”.

The congress will take place at the Stockholm international fairs, one of Europe’s largest and most modern fair and convention centres with very flexible meeting facilities. You will also find plenty of centrally located accommodation alternatives.

The theme of the congress is set to be “Endoscopic surgery – from an enigma to established clinical practice”. A theme we believe includes all vital aspects of this field enabling discussions concerning different disruptive technologies within the field of endoscopy. Moreover, presenting sound scientific evaluations of new technologies in the delicate attempt to bridge the gap between technological innovations and evidence-based medicine.
Stockholm is also the city where the first laparoscopic procedure was performed by Dr. H.C. Jacobeus at the Royal Seraphim Hospital in 1910, at that time probably at the state of an enigma for many.

You will come to Stockholm in early summer and meet a fresh green city with everlasting evenings with only a couple of hours of dusk interrupting the Nordic light. You will also find numerous cultural and other exciting events during your stay. A reception will be arranged in the City Hall, the site of the annual glorious Nobel price banquette. Another maybe not as glorious story is about the Vasa ship, which sunk in Stockholm on her maiden journey in 1628. However, now turned in to a successful museum she is the oldest preserved battleship in the world and will be the site for an evening event.

We look forward to a stimulating congress in our early summer flourish Stockholm, and on behalf of the EAES I warmly welcome you all in June 2008.

Gunnar Ahlberg MD, PhD
Congress President
